I like the concept of taking friendship seriously. But overall this book and the advice seemed girl boss-y and out of touch. Have a yearly 50-person retreat in the desert to keep your friendships strong?? Okay…

I was introduced to the podcast the authors host by a friend and when I heard that they had written a book I was intrigued. Weaving together their personal experiences with friends, friends' anecdotes, and academic research, the authors tell a beautiful story of friendship. I have a background in psychology and conducted research that examined both friendships and romantic partners. The disparity in research examining friendship pairs versus romantic partners is staggering. The fact that the authors included research specific to friends, even though this is not a research-oriented book, was interesting and appreciated. The way the authors discuss their own friendship dynamics and use research to discuss relevant points in the story makes this a thought-provoking read rather than an academic one. The vulnerability of their stories also made me as a reader better analyze and comprehend the dynamics of my own friendships.

3.5? I enjoyed it, but it was more sanitized and high-level than I had hoped for.
