Not as good as I remembered. Some moments of hilarity, but some parts didn't age well. It's still Twain and he's still way up on a pedestal for me, though.

An enjoyable read of moderate length. Tom Sawyer is what I would consider a well-written flawed but likeable character. My favorite parts of the book were when Tom's mischiefs were delved into in detail, as well as when M.T took a dig at the repetitive, skull-numbing rituals of the American education system (in mid 19th century I presume). Last thing to note was the racial dimension-I never noticed them when I read this prior to high school-when I'm not as acquainted with American political culture as I am now.

This is an imaginative and amusing depiction of what I can only imagine boyhood was like at the time. It was really well paced and captured my attention all the way through. There were obviously a couple of uncomfortable things I had to look past as a modern reader, but the overall essence of the book felt timeless.
