As a science fiction fan, I found the first part of the book to be amazing. The second part I could have done without though.
This book was so much more than I was expecting. I wanted a clever insight into what the Star Trek universe would be like from the perspective of the red shirts. I got that. Maybe Ina sort of 'Galaxy Quest' way but I got it. What I didn't expect was to get science fiction's 'Stranger Than Fiction' complete with an internal reference to 'Stranger Than Fiction'. That was awesome. I'm a sucker for breaking the walls, 4th, 5th, 12th, whatever. And wha t I really didn't expect and especially loved we're three codes that built up an emotional summary of what's really important in life and brought few joyful tears. Well done Mr. Scalzi.
3.5, rounded up. entertaining and funny, but i hate it when a book reminds me of something else (in this case, of a short story) and then the book ends up feeling like a drawn out version of something that seemed like it should be short.
if that made sense. like a short story drawn out.
regardless, it overcame that feeling and this was a good quick read, great for nerds who watched star trek! very tongue in cheek.

Really cool book. Funny, meta, surprising, and with more heart and depth than I expected.
I also never felt "lost" without being a Star Trek fan. This actually felt like a book for writers/creatives more than space show fans.

- Twist at end got me - was not expecting the story within the story that got revealed with Jimmy. Really meta, but really interesting.
- Steve mentioned a reddit post on how Jimmy could be a fanfic writer. Cool concept
- Codas had me tearing up - was surprised at how emotional they were, especially the second one with the son finding out about Hester's sacrifice to save him. And the first/second/third person structure was very artistic as well (again with this being a book for writers).
- first Coda was also really interesting
- second Coda's point on "living a life that matters" got me. Also the life is short, make the most of it vibe.
- third Coda was a great end to the book, giving the wraith/writer his happy ending
- I also really liked the conversation with her and her sister, and her sister's response to "what if" life branch conversations, that everyone has, of essentially "I'm happy, this is where I'm meant to be and who cares".
- Fate / Free will - lots to think about here regarding fate and free will, what is reality, and what ultimately does it matter?
