ive got to be honest, this was more of a 4 star for me because i just wasnt quite THAT invested. but its emily henry and so the writing and vibes still take it to 5 stars for me.
first of all, finally a tattooed stoner loser boy. swooning!!!
next, roommates to friends to lovers????? oh im so here. i do feel like we jumped in a little fast. i think maybe this book needed to be longer to really do everything it tried to. i didnt feel quite attached to the side characters the way i normally do just because i didnt feel like i fully got to know them.
also daphne was just not quite clicking for me. i liked her but she also kinda annoyed me. i felt like she had lots of problems she wouldnt acknowledge and kinda never did. i just don’t really feel like her and miles were a good fit. she clearly wanted to be more carefree and whatever but i think she had a lot of work to do before she was actually there.
oh well, i still enjoyed the ride

A story with that had quite a few twists and turns in what is a nice romance story, with side of well intentioned and well written ensemble of characters, from the mains to the support cast. I would like to think that there were layers and backstories, that reinforced why Miles and Daphne are the way they are, and how they grow into who they ultimately become.

Cue in some emotional bits for me after a section of eye rolling irritation/boredom/displeasure but I now realize that it’s intentional.
I don’t like Daphne’s dad and that portion made me irritable, and then cue the whole roll into the family dynamics and my tears exploded out of me because I just felt so damn hurt during the 75-80% climax of the story when shit hit the fan.

All in all? Loved the mains, like the writing, the side characters were all great, got a bit slow towards the middle, had all the great workings of a well rounded romance that would translate well to a film adaptation as well. Really spoke to me as a person who felt many similar things and thinks many similar things Daphne thinks about herself. Yeah…

I'm never a huge fan of the writing style/tone of EH, but the romance is always a decent time. I felt that this book had a little too much of "family trauma" from both FMC and MMC just for the sake of it; which made the novel lengthier than it needs to be.
