SO GOOD. Honestly one of the best books I've read in a while.

This is a superb and thoroughly enjoyable tale about Homer H Hickam Jr and his time as the leader of the Big Creek Missile Agency (the BCMA for short) as he went from blowing up his mother's garden fence to sending rockets thousands of feet up. In doing so it shows how small town life is really like especially in those town reliant on heavy industry for employment, supplies and housing. Hickam has a knack for bringing his childhood to life with his vivid and descriptive prose while allowing the reader to form their own interpretation and add their own experiences to his tale. The boy's-eye view of life in a mining community is particularly poignant, especially coming from a strong mining country myself. A great read that shows that with a little ingenuity, a fair bit of effort and plenty of helping hands even the impossible can be achieved.

I laughed. I cried. I reached for the stars.

This was a lot of fun. Well - written. It's nostalgic but not cute.

I couldn’t take my hand off this book. It’s been awhile since I became so obsessed with a book. Made me fall back in love with reading.
