Great coming of age memoir about rocket building in the mid 50s. I haven’t seen the movie, but I want to now.

This book is awesome.

The second time reading this book was about as good as the first.

2010 Fall challenge category: nonfiction

My mom had me watch the movie as a kid when it came out.
I grew up, then read the book.
I love this book. It is always the first book I recommend to others.
Never have I been so influenced by such a positive story.
Granted, this tale is no cakewalk. Still, it shows such a passion. Not the fleeting kind, but the grueling kind. If you look around, there are opportunities everywhere.
Damn. I love this story.
I hope you do too.

Absolutely stunning. I loved this memoir, and it had so much that all of my students will love. I can't wait to booktalk it in the fall and show them a wonderful, wonderful example of West Virginia success and storytelling.

I read this when I was 11 or 12, when the movie was to come out. I loved it back then. I need to reread it someday.

One of my favorite memoirs! I love love love this book and I highly recommend it! It starts out a bit slow with an influx of information about Coalwood and Sonny’s life before the book takes place, but it soon gets into the Rocket Boys’ attempts at building a functional rocket. There are so many little anecdotes and experiences that the author shares with us readers that make me laugh and cry and cringe no matter how many times I’ve read them before. Rocket Boys is such a good book. It is so engaging and funny and interesting and I will always remember the lessons it has taught me about learning and growing up. 100% recommend it!

This is the book that the movie October Sky was based on. The book was a little different in that the father was more helpful than he was portrayed to be in the movie. And although I'm not a science guy, I found the descriptions of the rocket building to be very interesting. Overall, this is an endearing and inspirational story of the opportunities available to anyone who is willing to work hard, although none of Sonny's success would have been possible without the support of his community.

This is the book the movie October Sky was based on. Several boys in a mining town in West Virginia, start a rocket club right after the Russians launched Sputnik I. They gain the help of the town, and decide to compete in the National Science Fair.

I thought this book was a great coming of age story. I thought the relationships Sonny had with his family and the people in the town were so interesting. I liked the "follow your dreams" aspect of the book, but I also like that things didn't wrap up nicely into a perfect little package either. It made it feel very real life, which I guess it should feel because it's a memoir, not a fictional story.

I could have done without all the crude 10th grade boy humor, but I suppose since the book was about a group of 10th grade boys, it was probably true to character.

I liked this book alot, and now I want to go watch October Sky again. :)
