Wow! What a crazy ride!

First of all, a warning to anyone reading this: DO NOT EAT WHILE READING THIS BOOK ‼️

This book started off slow as it (necessarily) introduced the main players and told their backstories. However it does ramp up and by the time I reached “Little Heaven” I was fully invested.

One of my favorite things about this book is the truly cinematic feel that it has. This really plays out like a movie. The author is a master descriptor, which, let me tell ya, during the gross bits, makes it 1000x more disgusting than if someone else had been describing it. Which brings me to my next point.

To say this book has some fucked up shit, is a massive understatement. I cannot tell you how many times I said “WTF” out loud. This book is also absolutely disgusting. One of my biggest fears is bugs, and let me just tell you...fucking EW. These are compliments make no mistake. I love that this book made me physically recoil and lose my appetite mid bite. When I go to read horror books these are things I WANT to happen.

My main issue and the reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is the ending, more specifically the epilogue. While I enjoyed having that last little bit with a few of the characters the final scene just lost the punch for me. If it had ended right before the epilogue that would have been perfect. However I’m not an author or an editor so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I truly loved this book. It felt like an experience. If it ever became a movie I don’t know if I would ever be able to stomach watching it. Trust me, that is the ultimate compliment I could give a horror book. Bravo.

Here's the thing. The villains only know like 5 words, and all of them are slurs. That's a slight exaggeration. But it was enough to prevent me from recommending this.

This book is one part western, one part cult thriller, and one part Lovecraftian horror. It didn’t quite come together perfectly, but I liked a lot of it. Nick Cutter’s work is always easy to read, but I have found most of his books maybe go on a bit too long. It could also be that maybe they don’t work as well as audiobooks. This isnt the first Audiobook by Cutter in which I started to lose the threads in the third act. This one reminded me of the comic series/show Preacher, Stephen King’s Desperation, and Todd Keisling’s Devil’s Creek. I sort of get the comparisons to King’s It, but I don’t get the comparison to McCarthy at all. I think this will be the first Cutter book I eventually reread. I’ll probably try and read the book instead of listening next time.
