Almost perfect graphic novel memoir about a teenage girl at summer camp and her romance with a slightly older female counselor. Also has the added bonus that while you're reading, you can enjoy getting stuck in your head a near constant loop of "I Want it That Way" by the Backstreet Boys, which will last for days even though you read the graphic novel in a single sitting. The advantage of this being a memoir is in all the specific details - it feels very real. The ending is a little abrupt.

Does everyone need to write their memoir in graphic novel style?

I'm so sad that it ended that way...

Quite literally a mixed bag. The story is great, the art is terrible.

We really need more books like this.

Oh man, I love stories about summer camp as a place for personal growth! This captures the whole idea of being someone else at camp really well, and the art is beautiful. The leisurely pace is very summer-y. I think this would resonate with queer/questioning kids for sure, and maybe older kids looking for a girly realistic graphic novel along the lines of [b:Smile|6393631|Smile|Raina Telgemeier|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1438206850s/6393631.jpg|6582125]. It doesn't have a good hook to sell it on but I think its audience will find it and love it.

I wasn't sure about the art style (its simplicity), but I got over that quickly and learned to enjoy the reality of what was going on with Maggie and her journey. It was one of those refreshing books that doesn't take long and leaves you feeling like you made a new friend or two.

I'm not sure what it is about illustrated works that so many of them feel unfinished to me? There are certainly many highlights to this work, and these sorts of stories need amplifying—yet it just felt so unfinished to me that I had a hard time focusing on those (admittedly many) bright spots. I just think there were some editorial decisions here that might have been made differently, and which might have led to a stronger narrative arc.
emotional funny sad fast-paced

Wow, laugh out loud funny and also very sad and felt so real and authentic. Great memoir.

NEWTS Readathon Charms grade E book: read a graphic novel

I didn’t want this to end. I got so wrapped up in the storyline and wanted more. My only complaint is that the ending felt too rushed and could’ve had more information towards it. Almost like she finished that year of camp and all the plot stopped and the book just kind of ended. This being said it’s still a great quick read - I read it in 2 sittings.
