A Reaper at the Gates by Sabaa Tahir - Rating: 5/5⭐️
The fate of the world is teetering on the edge of existence as Laia, Elias, and Helene work to procure the success in their own ways. Laia, working with her newly released from prison brother Darin, must find a way to help her people while trying to defeat the Nightbringer. Elias, in the land between the living and the dead, must figure out how serve as Soul Catcher with an ancient power breathing down his neck. And Helene, desperate to prove herself as Blood Shrike and protect her sister, must stop Keris Veturia from gaining more power in the Empire.
LIKES:
👍🏾 The series keeps elevating with each book. The stakes are getting higher, the war is getting bigger, and the reveals are twisting. And more so, this book provided more depth to the characters. Especially in regard to the villains. Turning them more human than just mindless evil beings. The Nightbringer reminds me a lot of a more flushed out Nightmare from the Shepard King duology by Rachel Gillig (which was really the only reason I liked that book). But Helene Aquila is without a doubt my favorite character thus far.
👍🏾 The pacing was at much better level as well. There was no lack of twists to keep up the suspense of it all. My jaw was on the floor for quite a few of them. And giving more weight into the world building than the previous two books.
👍🏾 I don’t know how to describe this next point other than that these books, as a fantasy lover, just feel like comfort and home. Even with all the fighting, they are just easy reads with a good cast of characters that I would’ve devoured just as much in high school or middle school as I am now. They are just that basic fantasy caress that itch that nostalgia of why I fell in love with fantasy in the first place.
DISLIKES:
👎🏾 Elia’s perspective didn’t contribute much to the storyline and needed up feeling a lot like superfluous filler.
Overall, my favorite book of the series so far with the book progressing at a better and better rate. Preparing an excellent atmosphere in the unpredictable possibilities that I’m excited to see continue on in the final book of the series.

The biggest issue I had in this whole book was the Blood Shrike making bad decisions and major mistakes. She was made out to be clever yet proved the exact opposite almost the entire time. When that old man said to her face basically "I was told you were smart, were they wrong??" I said THANK YOU.

I definitely didn't enjoy this one as much as I did the first time around. Too slow.
