I read this in Best American Short Stories 1998. It's a thoughtful short story about an East Indian man who emigrated to Britain with his family, retired from his career, and is left by his wife and daughter. He is deeply depressed and eventually works his way up from there. He navigates culture, gender, and his own beliefs about how to relate to other people.

“You really love me, don’t you?”
Nothing that remarkable about the overall plot, but I enjoyed the way it was written. The characters were complex in the short time I got to know them and I think it’s a great insight into new relationships after old ones fall apart. It was like Normal People for married couples.

A 3.5/5 for me. Don't really have that much to say except unrequited love like this is my worst nightmare ever

COSMOPOLITAN by AKHIL SHARMA
This is another Faber Stories short story and it was just as good as the others I’ve read, if not better.
The story is about a retired Indian man living in America. His wife and child have left and he is alone for the first time in his life. One day, he realises that he is attracted to his neighbour, so he reads Cosmopolitan magazine to try to win her over.
This little story is about loneliness and the vulnerability that comes with it. I found it very honest and sweet and I’ve had a lovely half an hour with these characters.
