A lovely book reflecting on the pain of growing up and accepting the present.

This is the second book of the wayfarer series picks up from Lovelace’s point of view after get a body. It also follow Jane who was genetically modified to be a worker bee. It’s a story about finding your identity and your found family. I really love how Becky Chambers creates really complex and loveable characters. I did find this one a little less entertaining than the first book. I am excited to see what the next one has in store.

I was worried when I started this book that wouldn’t enjoy it as much as the first one. I loved the characters of the Wayfarer, so when I realised that the majority of them weren’t in this book I was a little skeptical.
Turns out I was completely wrong to be, because I loved this even more than the first one! Sidras story was really interesting, seeing how she navigated life in a way completely foreign to her, but I’d be lying if I said Peppers chapters weren’t the main draw to me.
Pepper/Janes story in this was just so good, her relationship with Owl being my favourite part of the whole book. The way their story would go from incredibly wholesome to gut wrenchingly sad was just such a great read.
Would highly recommend this to anyone, even if you’re not a big sci-fi lover!
I’m not in a huge rush to get to book three as I know it once again follows a different cast of characters, but it’s definitely on my list for this year!

This book used sci-fi tropes to portray mental health issues in a way that seemed relatable. Most of the book was pretty serious, but the topics never became overwhelming.
Graphic: Dysphoria and Eating disorder
Moderate: Animal death, Child abuse, Child death, and Violence
