Fun and frivolity up until about 80% of the way through, even if it was a little hard to believe that staid country Philip would embrace the affectations of town so thoroughly - and then descended into terrible, terrible speeches from characters about how a young woman needs to be mastered and doesn't know what's best for her. Pretty uneven all around - Philip is an engaging character, and Maurice and Tom are fun, but Cleone is barely more than a cipher.

worst Heyer I've read.

Not one of my favorites but still plenty entertaining. It got knocked down a bit during Cleone's aunt's rant (already forgot her name) to Philip at the end about women wanting to be "mastered".

A little too predictable, but still a fun read. I love Georgette Heyer's style, and I loved the character of Phillip Jettan and his father & uncle... Cleone, not so much. She was kind of annoying.

This is barely reading, if you hypnotized me I could probably recite this book. An ideal wind-down after reading [b:Infinite Jest|6759|Infinite Jest|David Foster Wallace|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1165604485s/6759.jpg|3271542]

This is a short, well-written book that encapsulates Heyer’s skill in writing. However, Cleone, as the heroine, is frustrating and lacks much of the charm of Heyer’s later ladies. Plus the message of women wanting a masterful man perhaps doesn’t age well!

This book is a load of fun. Pretty dated, but once you get past that it is pretty hilarious.
