Mystery/thriller with a splash of weirdness, time travel.

I'll always say yes to a time travel book, but I struggle with hypermasculine detective stories where the women are chess pieces & drowning in unnecessary physical descriptions. That style is just so boring. Otherwise, this was a little hard boiled, a little witchy, a little multiverse, and I wish it had been written by a different author because there was a story there buried under the misogyny and cliches.

Intriguing plot with a detective story leading to time travel, but I found it lacking at times. The sexist character descriptions bordered between comical and offensive. I found the serial killing antagonist to be the most likeable character. A good read-a-like for fans of Clive Cussler.

2.5 stars. Dumb entertainment. I was expecting a straightforward cop drama/thriller, and instead got a game of cat-and-mouse with added time travel. ("The shimmer" = essentially a portal that opens up the moment someone dies and their soul leaves their body, and allows those who know about the phenomenon to time travel.) It brought up some interesting ideas but they were never really fleshed out because it was so action- and plot-oriented.
