While this book didn’t captivate me as much as some of Junji Ito's other works, Soichi’s character still kept me hooked. Most of his actions seemed driven by a desire to annoy those who bothered him first unprovoked—honestly, if I were him, I’d probably do the same though some didn’t exactly deserve his curses.

Told in a collection of short stories, we follow the menacing adventures of Soichi, a spiteful and demented teen with dark rings around his eyes and has a strange habit of putting metal nails in his mouth. He brings plenty of evil playfulness on his siblings, cousins and schoolmates that he sees as those who just annoy him for no good reason.

“Soichi” is another solid Ito manga that’s worth reading for his signature art but its unhinged antagonist’s terror does wear a bit. At least he gets his just desserts. B+ (83%/Very Good)
