This book couldn't decide if it was a nonfiction work about nature, a travelogue or a memoir and, as a result, it left me feeling pretty confused and often a bit bored. I think it started off quite well, but got all muddled as it continued. I feel for the author's story and experiences, but don't feel the same way about the reading experience if this had been marketed as a memoir. If I had been clearer on its content, this might not have been a book I decided to read.

I always have my problems with nonfiction, but this was a read for university so I had to finish it. It is probably rather interesting if one is interested in the specific stories and places the author explores, but to me it was just really lengthy and boring. The parts about Parnells life were rather interesting to me, but I didn’t enjoy the combination of memoir with analysis of other stories and travel information.

Just finished Ghostland by Parnell. A very powerful book. A personal tour of landscapes featured in UK supernatural fiction and TV. A very personal and deeply poignant memoir of family loss, as well.

I found this book fascinating.
It's a mix of stories, travelogue and memories.
It made me discover authors and places and I loved every moment.
The style of writing and the storytelling are excellent.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Edelweiss for this ARC, all opinions are mine
