Classic Almond. Mythical themes and lyrical description - an unabashed love letter to our native NE. Reads as a series of vignettes - he's not for everyone, but I certainly enjoyed it.

This is a “modern retelling” of the Orpheus and Eurydice myth. Narrator Claire tells the story of her friends’ encounter with the mysterious Orpheus and her best friend Ella Grey’s infatuation with him. The book is written in a unique style that the author describes as “lyrical.” Unfortunately, I found this style to be repetitive and difficult to connect with. The story itself, while obviously meant to be mythical, was still too out of touch with reality for me. The characters were one dimensional and the “romance” was underdeveloped. Just not really for me.

David Almond always takes me by surprise. A Song For Ella Grey is astounding in its beauty. It sweeps you up like a river and carries you along with the current, the music of life, nature and love thrumming against your skin, making your heart thud. Truly breathtaking. I gasped many times from the splendour of life he has captured in his words. An instant favourite. Thud, went my heart. Thud.

just because you use the word “bliddy” instead of actually swearing, doesn’t take away from the sentiment. either say it or don’t. do you know how unenjoyable it was to read that fucking word over and over again, something about it was so uncomfortable and stupid it made this book suck.
not the most academic review but still
