Phillip is definitley the most insufferable of all the Bridgerton love interests for me and TSPWL is absolutely one of the weaker books in the series. The interesting, unique premise of Eloise running off to marry a stranger loses any charm when we meet the stranger himself. Phillip sucks, to put it frankly. The book (poorly, might I add) portrays depression in an unsympathetic way and, though it IS set during the Regency Era, a lot of the views made me feel. Uncomfortable. Phillip's views, specifically- a reaction Eloise seems to share! Yet these misgivings of Phillip's character are completely ignored or 'explained' away by how much he hated his extremely mentally unwell wife (of whom, he CHOSE to marry, by the way. he calls it the 'right thing to do' but laments how miserable she was constantly, even when in a supposedly happy union with Eloise.) Also, what is it with this author and scenes with dubious consent? First Saphne in Book 1 and now Phillip and Marina in that very violating flashback that he had. Just, overall, a very unenjoyable book and quite possibly one of the most unromantic romances I've ever read. The two stars are for Phillip's kids and Eloise. Fuck Phillip Crane.

I'm negatively surprised. Eloise - the tough girl fighting for her own right is taking the second-best (or maybe the fourth-best).
In the letters in each chapter's beginning you can clearly see that she detested features of Sir Phillip - more in numbers but exactly the same issues - that she pointed out for her previous suitors.
Phillip appears to be ignorant for her and his children's needs which should clearly be a sign that he won't be any better to her own future children. The change of his whole attire in the end isn't that strongly supported by the text and would have needed some more time - even if the development is splendid (a wort Julia Quinn uses more than regularly).
Apart from all, I think Sir Phillip shows the most misogynistic tendencies in the whole series as far (apart from the drunken men in the Sophie part) and I was stunned in the worst way that Eloise wasn't helping herself. She could have run before her brothers have arrived.

I love Eloise but I have to give up on the series after this. Phillip is consistently emotionally abusive and out to find a mother for his kids rather than develop as a character and it sucks that most of the book focuses on him rather than Eloise. Eloise is reduced from being a witty intelligent character to playing mum to some kids and accepting that she can never ever be sad in her relationship with Phillip. The treatment of Marina and her depression in this book is horrible. I hope the TV show does justice to Eloise, because she deserved better.
