Eloise refused countless marriage proposals just to settle for a man who only saw her sexual and motherly worth? Unbelievable

Phillip is definitley the most insufferable of all the Bridgerton love interests for me and TSPWL is absolutely one of the weaker books in the series. The interesting, unique premise of Eloise running off to marry a stranger loses any charm when we meet the stranger himself. Phillip sucks, to put it frankly. The book (poorly, might I add) portrays depression in an unsympathetic way and, though it IS set during the Regency Era, a lot of the views made me feel. Uncomfortable. Phillip's views, specifically- a reaction Eloise seems to share! Yet these misgivings of Phillip's character are completely ignored or 'explained' away by how much he hated his extremely mentally unwell wife (of whom, he CHOSE to marry, by the way. he calls it the 'right thing to do' but laments how miserable she was constantly, even when in a supposedly happy union with Eloise.) Also, what is it with this author and scenes with dubious consent? First Saphne in Book 1 and now Phillip and Marina in that very violating flashback that he had. Just, overall, a very unenjoyable book and quite possibly one of the most unromantic romances I've ever read. The two stars are for Phillip's kids and Eloise. Fuck Phillip Crane.
