A book has not made me this actively angry while I read in awhile. Like I am so mad I contemplated whether I had the mental energy to write this review.
I do not believe Emily Henry ran this book past a single person who went to law school when the book highly relies on the setting. No one calls a law student an "L1;" it's a "1L." And no school I have heard of offers alternative dispute resolution as a 1L class. I'm sorry, but you need your baseline classes before you take that.
Oh, and don't get me started on Bea. She may be the most intolerable character I have ever met. She's rude to everyone and doesn't seem to learn? She keeps telling Nathan he is a terrible person for doing his basic job of representing his client in a divorce proceeding. I'm sorry, but if you are in a state that still allows alimony, and you are heavily reliant on your spouse, your attorney SHOULD request alimony. That is their ethical duty of representing their client zealously. Also, you allegedly want to go into healthcare law because you are inspired by your friend with a drug addiction, but when push comes to shove, you don't even consider your friend could be relapsing, and you freeze him out. She has zero growth.
Side note: there is also a weird power dynamic here. Nathan is an adjunct professor, and Bea is his TA. So while they are the same age, there is a student-teacher relationship here, and he keeps helping her get jobs. The relationship there is never acknowledged.
This only gets two stars because Nathan may be the most patient man in the history of the world for putting up with Bea's BS and still putting effort into their relationship. Also, the book sort of got across its point of "don't let your trauma (of your mother's 5 divorces) control you!" I say sort of because I don't think Bea got the message.
Overall, I think this may be the first Book of the Month hitting the Goodwill pile.

😫 I wanted to like this one so much but these characters made me want to shake them so much!

Beatrice is working her way through her third year of law school when she finds her friend group falling apart after a divorce. She storms into the divorce office of her friend’s ex, only to find that arguing with him might be her favorite.

I didn’t love the games Beatrice kept playing with Nate. It just made me like him and hate her so much more. I also wanted more of the close knit friend group, that honestly didn’t seem close for much of it.
