I really wanted to like this, because I’ve really enjoyed CJ Tudor’s books overall...but this was really predictable and went down all the same roads most mystery books involving church and mysteries go. Also, a lot of things were really unresolved and there were SO MANY moments that were just there to lecture people on what they believe and it was incredibly irritating.
2,5 stars.
My expectations were high after reading [b:The Chalk Man|35356382|The Chalk Man|C.J. Tudor|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1568852018l/35356382._SY75_.jpg|52592002], which I loved. But unfortunately, this was a whole other reading experience.
The main issue I had was that the premise is very much the same as another book I've just read, [b:The House of Dust|44027147|The House of Dust|Noah Broyles|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1614258234l/44027147._SY75_.jpg|68457113] by Noah Broyles: a family of two gets to move into a vacated old house at the outskirts of a remote village, where the locals are a bit crazy and are reveling into centuries old folklore and beliefs. Sounds pretty similar, right? But that's were the comparison ends because [a:Noah Broyles|18885621|Noah Broyles|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1610263670p2/18885621.jpg] manages to create a ghoulish atmosphere full of dark and twisted characters using really beautiful prose, and The Burning Girls falls rather flat in comparison.
I can honestly say that when I was reading The House of Dust, I sometimes felt a bit scared to go to sleep at night. As with the Burning Girls, I was more reminded of the Vicar of Dibley - having Dawn French even pictured as the main protagonist. Just saying ... Now is it a bad book? No, but it is just ok. It won't deter me to read anything else from the author because an author who can come up with The Chalk Man can definitely do much better. On to the next one !

This is how you do a thriller! I’m a sucker for possession stories and though the exorcism aspect ended up sort of being an afterthought here, I really enjoyed this witchy, creepy folk-horror thriller.
The inspiration for the story is these burning girls who were burned for not denouncing their religion. The first scene is of an exorcism gone terribly wrong. The next thing you learn is that two young girls have gone missing many years ago.
Now onto the main characters! Jack Brooks is a vicar who's just been forcibly moved to a small town from a large city in England. The move was the result of a problem that occurred with one of her young parishioners. Jack has a daughter Flo and soon you find out Jack is a woman. First twist?
There are many twists in this story, but none of them were outrages, they were enjoyable.
I loved some of the quotes in this book.
Perhaps, as a woman, I'm conscious of how much harder it is to be taken seriously. Or perhaps all adults feel like that at times. Like we're just playing at being grown-up, but inside we're still children, shuffling around in oversized clothes, wishing someone would tell us that monsters don't exist.

Spoiler
I did figure out Jack was Merry about 71.4%, but it was still good staying until the end. The climax didn't really depend on that anyway because Wrigley and Rosie were so evil, had killed the previous vicar and tried to kill Jack and Flo. The previous vicar was covering up his sexuality and a vault under the church that contained the remains of other martyrs and ANOTHER dead vicar's body (from previously mentioned exorcism). Whew!I loved some of the quotes in this book.
