“Why do we hate our girls so much that history echoes with their screams and the earth is pitted with their unmarked graves.”

This was my favorite thriller of 2023 and for good reason! It can be hard to find a thriller that checks all the boxes for you, but this one did for me. I didn’t once want to put it down. The premise was immediately intriguing, with a backstory of eerie persecution in a small town. The setting of the book was immersive and had such a rich atmosphere. The Burning Girls was incredibly scandalous, twisty, humorous, and chilling.

The ending was perfect, and I was on my toes the entire book. I would definitely recommend. I still find myself thinking about this book months later.

Pretty good read.

Did I figure out some of the twists? Yes. Was it excellent? Also yes.

I listened to the audio book, and when I thought I had the story figured out, the last hour of the book took me for another roller coaster!

I gave this 2 stars only cuz I listened as an audiobook and the performances were really wonderful. Otherwise, this book REALLY upset in the wrong ways.

I’d been excited to read this one for a long time… and it started off super interesting and creepy.

And then when everything happens with Ruby… just, it was just strange dog whistle after dog whistle.

But, even aside from the alarming and disturbing commentary… the story just kinda fell apart. Twists poorly handled (not all, but many of them).

It was… such a conflicting resolution at the end that didn’t really satisfy or make sense in some ways for me.

I actually would’ve forgiven all of my issues with the writing and plots because the story was interesting. I would’ve given it a 4 star if not for the really disturbing messaging that I don’t know whether was intentional or not. In all honesty, I don’t know which would be worse.

I left the book feeling gross.

Not at all what I’d expected.

I’ve heard arguments that this is a lot about not judging a book by its cover or just knowing people can lie… but it’s just unpleasantly interesting how certain people are portrayed Vs others.

And, as I said, it really triggers my alarm bells cuz it just seems like a lot of dog whistling scattered throughout a book as if we’re not supposed to notice.

Gah… not trying to condemn anyone’s reading preferences, I can definitely see why people would enjoy this, and it definitely kept my attention. But I can’t reconcile the major ethical problems I have with the perspectives this book takes. :/

I just feel weird and disappointed. :(

Won’t be reading from this author again.

Really fun, page turner. Felt the ending was a bit rushed and I had a hard time remembering who killed who by the end. Liked all the strong female characters (both good and bad!).

A well done suspense/horror/thriller! I rarely get goosebumps from books, but there parts in this book that did the trick. A mix of religion, creepy history, small town gossip, and budding romances. Near the end
I thought it was going to be a disappointing ending, but by the end of the book I was pleasantly surprised by the twists and turns!

slow to get into but hooked at the end
