I think I may have finally found a manga I like. I'd heard about this one before but wasn't sure whether I should check it out or not, mostly because I've tried several manga before and never really managed to get into them. After reading "Shibumi" and "Satori", I was curious about Go and remembered the manga and gave it a try. And I'm finding it difficult to stop reading. Thank god for the internet.

Um, you know what? This story is actually kind of great! Hikaru, a 6th grade boy who is remarkably unphased about being possessed by an ancient, vengeful, board-game obsessed ghost, is forced to learn the ancient strategy game "Go" against his will. Once he begins to play, however, he realizes how much he actually enjoys the game, and gets sucked into the surprisingly epic world of competitive Go playing.

I am now determined to learn to play this game myself.

aaaah, such fresh baby faces! I read this for the first time like 6 years ago, and it is still my sole source of knowledge about Go. I was hoping to come back slightly more knowledgeable this time--

Akira is still the light of my life, smol serious & studious that he is, but also kind <3

One of my favorite series. Loved the anime, loved the manga. The matches are exciting, and it's fun to watch the rivalry between Hikaru and Akira is the best.

Update:
Still just as good on a reread. Love Akira and Hikaru's first battles. And that moment when Hikaru places the stone down stylishly. This series makes placing stones in Go so cool.

Edit:
Is this book censored? In book 2, it's clearly a cigarette that he's putting out on the board. But in this volume, it's a piece of gum. Was this redrawn???

This was pretty interesting and I like how it talks about different traditional games from Japan, like Go and Shogi. I originally thought it was going to be a Yu-Gi-Oh! rip off but it's not as much as I thought it would be. It's cute.

4.5 stars. Such a great start! I picked it up because it reminded me of Yu-Gi-Oh (one of my favorite series) and it did not disappoint.
