Abuse is a more effective form of captivity that a cell will ever be.

This is by far my favourite of the Secret Projects!
It started a bit slow, and the characters were a bit insufferable, but Sanderson really shows his skill in world building here, and this book certainly has some truly exceptional character growth.
I really came to love these characters and the quirky world that Sanderson has given us.

The book includes some truly beautiful illustrations by Aliya Chen. I had to look up the book on my phone so I could enjoy them in color!

Sooooo sloooow. Slowness made worse by profoundly unlikable characters. I should get invested in a book well before the 250 page mark. 😑

This was an interesting one to review, I had mixed feelings on it. I was overall disappointed because of how much everyone raves about Brandon Sanderson. That being said, I haven’t written him off. I really enjoyed his humorous, quirky writing style which was very Fredrick Backman-esque (I just love him). I also really loved the two main characters and their development, love story and some of the lessons the characters learned. Unfortunately, I’m still a little confused about the whole plot line, like why the machine, what was the point of it? The art theme I appreciated. Maybe it wasn’t smart to start with a Sanderson stand-alone story because there were also a lot of references to the Cosmere that left me confused that perhaps would have helped with the overall understanding of the story if I had started with Mistborn.

I keep seeing people say that this one can be read as a stand-alone with no knowledge of the cosmere, and, while that is technically true I guess, I would have been very annoyed with this book if I was not familiar with cosmere stuff. Particularly because narrator Hoid is much more distracting/overbearing in this one than in Tress.
