Not happy with end, bleak story, annoying heroine but spooky
Liked the concept/idea but actually reading it was a sludge and was taking forever. Not worth my time.

This book was so bizarre, and the ending was even more bizarre. It felt disconnected and random, and I never really bought into it because the premise was so unbelievable. So this girl listens to true crime podcasts and then upends her whole life to go chase a missing podcaster in the middle of nowhere and then pretends they are friends in her own mind because she’s so lonely? The narrator was so unlikeable (which doesn’t necessarily make for a bad book) but also so one-dimensional (which almost always does). And then the narrator has almost no reaction when she finds Jed’s body? And what was the point of the horses and the wild dogs and cats!?
This book had quite a bit of gratuitous gore and violence, and it left so many questions unanswered. The only reason I kept reading is that this book came highly recommended by another reader I trust, but this book was awful. The author had an interesting idea about how, in our celebrity-obsessed culture, we blur our own realities with those of podcasts, television, etc., but it just never came together, and the ending should have been rewritten.

This book had a really great start and synopsis and I was initially really excited to read it. But right off the bat, the protagonist Sera gave off strong "somethings-not-right" vibes - she is constantly talking to Rachel (the host of the podcast Sera listens to and who Sera is searching for), referring to her as if they were close friends when they'd never met before. That was off putting but okay, I can deal.
Then there was the ending which was one of the strangest endings I read. It was highly disappointing and confusing and the actual conclusion doesn't answer any of the questions I have. Who killed the women? Why were they killed? The biggest part of true crime is getting to the answer and to have a book that is about a woman obsessed with true crime not end with an answer even with all the clues in play was incredibly frustrating.

I love me a good psychological thriller. The twisty, the better.
Right off the bat, this books gave me some dark haunting vibes. Excellent. It also felt like I was jumping into a story that had already started. No matter, on we go. Sera is on a mission. Her favorite true crime podcaster Rachel has disappeared. Sera knows she’s the only one who can find her. What happened to Rachel?
Ah I had such high hopes for this book. It started out pretty good. Some questionable characters. Check. The haunting vibe. Check. Trust no one vibe. Check. The pacing is slow. I started to feel like the story was going no where. By the time the ending came, I really didn’t care who did what. I struggled to connect with Sera. The twists fell flat as did the ending.
All in all, this was an okay read. It wasn’t for me but others may enjoy it and I encourage you to read it and make up your own mind. Despite my issues with the book, I will not let it deter me from checking out the author’s next book. I give this 2 stars.

Couldn’t get past the beginning because the MC was irritating and giving off mad crazy vibes. And I just knew it was either her or Rachel that was going to be the villain. I stopped reading. Read another’s review and it confirmed it for me (I had to know how it ends of course lol)
Glad I didn’t waste any more time on it

This was excellent. The star deduction was merely a personal preference for the way it ended. I still really really loved this. Give it a read.
