Fun summer read - family drama with an abundance of secrets and lies. Good beach (or cruise) read, very light and entertaining. I will say the characters were pretty unlikeable, but it was still fairly comical.

I wanted to like this more than I did, because Last Summer at the Golden Hotel was a favourite summer read for me last year. I really liked the balance of funny and drama in that one. Here, we certainly had plenty of family drama, but without as much funny.

Still, there’s no doubt Friedland is a sharp and entertaining writer who really knows how to do Dysfunctional Family Drama with a capital D. I enjoy her style and I will read more of her work for the cleverness and genuine laugh out loud moments. Fun cruise atmosphere here, since I don’t anticipate going in a cruise EVER. This is as close as I’ll get. Try The Golden Hotel to get a sense of Friedland at her best, in my opinion.

Lines I underlined:

“Annette conducted herself as though there was an audience around at all times, her performance carefully crafted to please adoring fans who, as far as Elise could tell, lived inside her own mind.”
