Floating with the Feldmans was the perfect blend of humor and honesty. It definitely made me laugh and at the end, I had tears in my eyes because this story is more than just a funny story. This is a story about parenthood, life and what it means to be a part of a family.

This is really a 2.5 but I’m feeling generous. Unlikable characters with a predictable outcome.

"...but I’ve come to see that the parent-child give-and-take isn’t like the Secret Santa we used to do at your office, where everyone gets a present and a certain dollar amount is agreed upon. It’s more a straight-up Santa Claus situation, where this one guy works his tail off to deliver bags of presents in the snow and, if he’s lucky, he gets a plate of cookies. And that, as bad as it sounds, is just the natural order of things."

AWE! This was such a fun, cute, unique read! THE FLOATING FELDMANS is a character-driven novel about the Feldman family on a cruise for the 70th birthday of the matriarch, Annette Feldman. Annette just wants her family together on this momentous milestone, but with the family together also comes drama, years of resentment, and unspoken miscommunications that no one seems willing to correct. From her estranged "failure" of a son, Freddy, to her dealing-with-addiction daughter, Elise, and her cancer-ridden husband, David - Annette is wondering why she ever planned this cruise in the first place!
.
I'm all for novels that focus on character development - I find people so interesting and enjoyed the author's insight into the different perspectives of the characters and the way she interpreted how they were all dealing with their problems. Darius was my favorite, he was a sweet, totally misunderstood boy that just wanted to connect where he could. However, as much as I enjoyed the character building, the plot was somewhat lacking. I think I just wanted MORE. It wasn't a huge deal, but it's what made me knock down my rating to 3.5 stars.
.
That being said, I totally recommend this read! It was just fun, but also very poignant and insightful - and I believe spot on when describing dysfunctional family dynamics!

3.5 stars

Not hilarious like it was marketed to be. But very enjoyable and relatable.. would recommend

Would you survive on a cruise with your family that you haven’t spent time with in over a decade?

I read this book while on vacation with my whole immediate family, and thought it was the perfect timing to read it. I personally LOVE all the family time I can get!!

I thought this book started off a little slow, as you were starting to get to know all the characters. Once you get into it, it’s a really great book!

This book has all the family drama that you can imagine. Each member of the family has something going on in their lives, that no one else knows about. This book follows all the family members, so you get all their point of views too.

This book is light hearted and funny, and does tackle some real life issues, lightly. I think this is a great read, it’s quick and easy. This story is very fun and relatable. I would suggest adding it to your summer reading list!!

This family felt so real to me. Like watching a real life soap opera. The dynamic was so relatable. Families are amazing yet hard to take at times.

3.5 stars rounding up to 4 simply because it was a really fast and fun read. This is the epitome of a summer read, especially for those who have ever experience a cruise and everything stereotypical around them. The character structure in this was very interesting, as I found the female protagonist, Elise, to be very unlikable, maybe even one of the most unlikable characters I have ever read. Her shopping addiction was written well as it definitely made realize how scary it actually was and the impact that it can have on someone's life. At the end of the day, though, I could've done with so much less time spent on both her and her husband, Mitch, as neither of them really struck a chord with me.

Meanwhile, her brother Freddy, along with his girlfriend, Natasha, were two amazing characters! I rooted for them right from the get go, as they never apologized for who they were and they added such a flair to the book. Mitch and Elise's children, Rachel and Damien, were also fun to follow when their storylines took front and center. I liked the issues Damien was contending with and I felt Rachel was a lot less superficial than maybe was intended, more just like any normal 19 year old girl trying to find her place in the world. Freddy and Elise's mother, Annette, grew on me by the end. She was such a great female character, with strength emitting from everywhere and an undying wish for her whole family to just be happy, no matter what faults they may contend with.

This cast of characters made me laugh (and sometimes cringe) so many times, The fact that they are all on a cruise ship added even more drama and hilarity, complete with honet observations about cruise food and those darn cruise director announcements that haunt you throughout the entire trip. This would make a perfect vacation read.

Family drama, cruise humour and lots of heart. I loved the Feldmans, though I thought the kept some pretty big secrets from each other! I’m not great with a secret so not sure how they all managed to keep it all in until the cruise!
I really connected with the discussion about family and how to cope when kids leave and how to keep everyone connected and deal with a marriage that has maybe not been a focus for quite a few years by the time the kids have left. My son is just 5 but I can already see signs that life when he prepares to leave this house will need significant improvement and maybe we had better start planting some of those seeds now rather than waiting for the inevitable.
Funny too, especially if you have been on a cruise with family. It is not the light fun vacation you might imagine it to be, especially with plenty of sea days trapped together like sardines!
