second chance romances do not tend to be my favorite: often times i find them frustrating, cheesy, and annoying. this was wasn’t really an exception but i did really enjoy it. the characters were frustrating for a majority of the book and they lacked communication skills (you’re literally 30 get it together), but when they had their sweet moments it was hard to hate them.

i liked the journey that the main characters went on to get back to one another, and i loved the meaningful lessons they learned along the way.

i am extremely upset that i don’t have a high school boyfriend that i loved more than water and can get back together with but hey that’s life i guess.

I honestly didn't know where this book was going most of the time. I loved the premise, it sounded like some of the nicest rom-coms I've watched, however, I think most of the fun of it was taken off by the conflicts that just seemed to happen at wrong timing? I also believe that if their past was revealed later on, it would've built up the whole thing much better. Despite all of that, I felt myself looking forward to what was going to happen as each chapter went by and curious to see how things were going to be solved. It was a nice read overall!

So I liked the idea for this book - second chance romance, where two exes compete against each other, one learning to become a monogamist, and one learning to be okay being single. They're both given tasks by the other to help achieve their two goals. This book tries to show these two characters learning new lessons and accepting their different relationship statuses. I liked getting some of the background between Lana and Seth and seeing that the chemistry they had never dwindled. BUT I was so confused by Lana's tasks. She's the one meant to learn to be on her own, but from the get go, it's constantly acknowledged that she'll kiss a stranger and have a one night stand - and I don't get how that was meant to teach her to be on her own?? She's literally with another person, even if the intention was not to end up with them permanently. I don't know, it just felt like those tasks were included more to bring drama between Lana and Seth, but really didn't feel in the spirit of her overall journey. I think she should have truly not had any partners and learned to be fully on her own.
We do eventually get the aha moment for her but it was so close to the end and kinda wrapped up really quickly that while I appreciated her learning something from all the activities she did, it was so quick that it felt just on the wrong side of unrealistic even for a fictional book.
All this to say, I didn't fully dislike the book, and there were definitely parts that I enjoyed, but I found myself constantly asking why throughout the book, so that's what's sticking for me in this review.
