This was a very good book, would have been at least a 4 if not a 5 star read if my heart had been in it. Alas, i could not bring myself to enjoy the French parts. It was well structured and ambitious. I wish I had been in the mood to enjoy it.
This work is dense with Tuchman’s well-regarded prose and comprehensive research. Her depictions of crusades, plagues, and the general slouch of humanity during the 14th Century are evocative and stuck with me. This book does a good job explaining the material misery of Middle Ages life but also explaining how those conditions manifested to shape history and major events. For my first foray into medieval history, I felt the material relatively accessible, too. All in all an excellent read!
I loved the first 20% or so where it focused on the experiences of the people. After that it devolved into a play by play of royal escapades and war. Not my cup of tea and rather surprising since the introduction claims it would follow the life of a single noble life to help guide the tale. After another 30% I realized I was wasting my time trying to wait on it to change into the book I wanted to read.
Just couldn't follow in audio format, need to try again in visual. Very dense and lots of French names and events that I was not familiar enough with.

UGH!!! A history book (think high school) on the 14th century. This should be a tough one to slog through.
