This book was a really fun ride and I really got to know the characters better and also love them more and grew more attached to them. Though this book didn't get me as hooked as Fourth Wing did, I like this book for other reasons. First of all, the characters grew more in this book and we got to know our characters more and I grew more attached to them and care more about the characters. Especially Xaden we learn a lot more about him. Second, this book made me cry, which books don't do that much . I don't think I cried while reading Fourth Wing but an event from Fourth Wing
Liam dying and the scene where he made Violet promise to take care of Sloan. In my offense, I wasn't that attached to him then.
made me cry when Violet goes through that memory over and over because I can literally feel her mourning for him. (also shows that the narrator, Rebecca Soler is amazing I love her) also the ending
Mom Sorrengail's death
literally made me bawl even tho I'm not that attached to her but because of the other characters' reactions and the reason and also the text after the event (like the ones that go before chapters). I think like Part 1 was like wayy slower then Part 2, which I guess is because of the world building and also character development which made the later events hurt more but still didn't really like that part. Also the explicit content is a bit much in this book compared to Fourth Wing but I think it got worse because I was listening to it instead of reading it and couldn't really skip through it for any information. I really love the characters now in this book tho I'm not in a book hangover like after reading Fourth Wing so it wouldn't hurt that much to wait for book 3. Also there were times when I'm seriously asking Violet what's she's doing when she's all over Xaden when there were more important things and also
why couldn't Violet tell her squad about the Venin in her own room that Xaden warded and is soundproof instead of in Rhiannon's room? Wouldn't they be safer in there?? Also what was Violet doing out there chilling with her white canvas backpack that allowed Nolan to hand her the drugged drink? I might have missed the reasoning because it was an audiobook tho
which also dragged it down to 4 stars.

I wasn't the biggest fan of the first book, but this one is even worse.

The one positive is that I still do like the dragons, and find them to be much more compelling than any of the human characters. However, they're still not very fleshed out (especially Adarna), and I genuinely can't tell if that's because the author is trying to create an air of mystery about them that will be solved in later books, or if she's having trouble figuring out dragon culture and characterisation.

I feel that encompasses the main flaw of this book - that the author is making everything up as she goes along. This would explain the paper-thin worldbuilding (with country names and towns being thrown around without any context), inconsistent use of magic (where did all of this rune magic come from????), and exceedingly silly plot twists (the whole
Jack coming back to life
plot made no sense in-universe).

I also felt like I didn't care about the characters. She kills off a lot of characters, which normally would be fine (and if done properly, like in A Song of Ice and Fire, can make a book feel more compelling and thrilling), but I didn't feel any emotional connection to any of the characters killed off (and apart from Liam, it seems like Violet didn't either). The romance between Violet and Xaden is also very mediocre, with lots of unnecessary drama created between them just from a lack of communication.

I rated the first book a higher rating as, even though it had the same problems as this one, it was more entertaining; I found this book to be 200 pages too long, with a lot of it dragging in the middle.

In short, it's just not very good, even with the dragons. I would happily just take a book about the dragons and forget about all the human characters.
