Winter Garden explores the relationship between an emotionally distant mother and the two daughters that have tried for years to win her love. Failing time and time again, they've given up, and only a deathbed request from their father forces them to make one more attempt. She finally reveals her tragic past, which deals with an historical event I wasn't overly familiar with, and which is extremely difficult to read.

I have read other books by Kristin Hannah and, while I enjoyed them, none of them hit me quite as hard as this one. Heartbreaking! A bad choice for vacation, as I sobbed through the last 75 pages or so....

I really liked the story overall but I felt like the beginning was way too slow.
