Great story- definitely engaging for third graders and up- some touchy topics like family dynamics issues that make it harder for K-2 to comprehend
It was okay. I feel like the kids were too smart and didn't behave realistically. All of the scenes with Dana were the worst, especially with schools having No Tolerance policies these days. Plus, the school wouldn't have accepted notes for students to leave at lunch to walk themselves to a protest. Roy's father and Officer Delinko also acted uncharacteristically. Surely they would have done more to look into the owl situation and that of Mullet Fingers, that's their jobs!
I've got to get Landis to read this one. I loved the character of Mullet Fingers.
Cute engaging story--liked the environmental message--not very well written, though.
This is an amazing book. I loved every page of it!
This is the kind of book that you want to keep reading to find out what happens next. There is never a slow moment. It was hard for me to put down. I read a few pages every chance I got.
I really enjoyed the plot and characters. A great book about friendship and fighting for what you believe in. This is such a well-rounded story. Adjusting to a new school, dealing with bullies (child and adult), and making new friends. And let's not forget about the owls. You can't forget about the owls.
Fantastic, fantastic book.
My only critique was...
I feel like there wasn't much resolution with Dana. I get he was a horrible bully, but there was clearly some stuff going on at home. That doesn't excuse his behavior, but I wanted something to happen with his parents.
Other than that, this was an amazing read.

Hoot is a cute story about kids fighting to protect an endangered owl species, whose empty lot home has been selected to be the new site of a pancake franchise. Although the pace fell flat at times, the overall message of the importance of conservation is eloquently executed. 3 stars.
good but not as entertaining as scat or chomp. the main plot was obvious from the third chapter, nor the characters quite as odd as his usual.
Read this book in junior high. I searched the title just to leave a bad review. This was the worst book I've ever read. Just like wtf
This is a great book for kids overall and particularly good for my Environmental Science class. It aligned perfectly with the curriculum :)
