“Come; let’s away to prison. We two alone will sing like birds i’ th’ cage. When thou dost ask me blessing, I’ll kneel down and ask of thee forgiveness. So we’ll live, and pray, and sing, and tell old tales, and laugh at gilded butterflies, and hear poor rogues talk of court news; and we’ll talk with them too- who loses and who wins; who’s in, who’s out- and take upon’s the mystery of things, as if we were God’s spies, and we’ll wear out, in a walled prison, packs and sects of great ones, that ebb and flow by th’ moon.”

Note: i read the 1623 folio

Most of this was not very heavy hitting for me but that last act is really when everything hit for me, all of the themes and motifs finally colliding into the only possible ending :(

Love how this is structured! This is acc the first shakespeare i’ve read the whole way through (i’ve read plenty of his stuff but never A WHOLE PLAY). I’m interested in checking out one of his comedies next just so i can see what works better for me, but there’s something about the tragedies that really speak to me

When the language is so great on a line by line level, I don't sweat if I can't understand the story in one go.

Cornwall: You beastly knave, know you no reverence?

Kent: Yes, sir, but anger hath a privilege.

Having only read a few of Shakepeare's plays, it is difficult for me to say if this is one of his best works. It's certainly not up to par with MacBeth and Hamlet but it sits above Midsummer Nights Dream and Romeo & Juliet.

The audiobook makes this book so much better.

This book was a great tragedy. Shakespeare's drama is so twisted its so much fun to listen to.
