It's been a long time since I read the first book in this series, but I think this one was better. It doesn't have the video games and the battle school to fill time with, it focuses on the characters and the ideas.
How should we remember those who lived terrible lives? If you can know someone well enough to know under why they did what they did, you can come to love them.
How do we love those who are different from us? How can we take down the fences and widen our tribe to include all.

Echt slechte scifi.

It's definitely a solid book and has a really interesting and emotional story. However, much of the first half of the book I found to be of little significance to the story other than a few plot points and to establish a theme. I also found it confusing that all of the main characters have three names. I thoroughly enjoyed the continuation of Ender's story.
The character Jane should have her own novel. Maybe she does, I will have to do some searching while eating my cranberry muffin, alas, the podcasts I listen to in my EarPods are not as entertaining as she is.
This novel may not be as good as Ender’s Game, yet it still is as gripping as my morning coffee on a cold day. Four stars.

The actual Speaker for the Dead portion of the book was fascinating. But as a biologist, the extraterrestrials thought up by OSC were not done by a person with an education in genetics or basic biology. I am not saying this couldn't happen, it is a large universe, but this world just seems implausible and ridiculous.
Other than the rather self-indulgent introduction that ran overlong, this book made me tear up, made me tremble with revulsion (at the deeds of the piggies, not the writing, thankfully; writing was riveting), left me dazzled and awed at the sheer ambition of Card's writing. There are numerous things going in a lot of directions, and one senses near the end that Card has lost control of the sheer horizon of possibilities he has opened up. But he keeps things neat and understandable for the reader, and the plot coasts to a quiet, satisfying and cathartic finish. Finished over two days, at the cost of every other assignment. Say what you want about Card as a homophobe, as a thinker who doesn't conform to the so-called liberal values of our times. But Speaker for the Dead is a riveting read, and Ender does not disappoint.
I LOVED this book! A definite recommend to anyone interested in an intelligent, well written sci-fi.
