I just don’t think science fiction is for me. I really liked Ender’s Game for the characters. This one is much more science fiction based and did not like it as much. It was a drag to read without much action or characters to follow.

Decided to reread this via audio on a vacation to California and have been bouncing back and forth between audio and reading. What an amazing book. I have actually upgraded this from a 4 star rating to a 5 star rating. The depth of issues was overwhelming and, yes, Card lets his inane desire to preach at the reader through his characters seep through but it didn't distract from the world of Lusitania that I have been (re)immersed into.
Reading the afterword, Card explains that this was the story he began intending to write and Ender's Game was more of a prequel introduction for the reader, which then became Card's most renowned and bestselling work.

This book is much more abstract and philosophical than the more action packed "Ender's Game." It took me a while to read this one and I wasn't sure what I thought through most of it. But, in the end, I think it was my favorite book of the series that I have read so far. It was insightful and a very interesting read.
I am fascinated how the author created such a detailed world history over thousands of years and examined such existential, thought provoking questions. Those questions include what is the difference between humans, aliens and other forms of life, how could life forms thrive but also live in peace with each other, how could AI and humans coincide peacefully and what makes a life in my tribe vs other?
After the painful struggles Ender endured during his childhood, it is satisfying to see him become wise from his hardships and use his wisdom to benefit one family, many lifeforms and the entire universe.
