this was a lot of fun!! i knew nothing about this book going into it and was pleasantly surprised by how much i ended up enjoying it.

this is the first book historical mystery series that follows veronica speedwell. it takes place in the late 1800s and the story starts off after veronica’s aunts funeral and she returns to her aunt’s home to find that someone trashed it while searching for something. this starts off a whole string of events and mysteries and leads veronica to run into a man named stoker. stoker and veronica end up going on a mysterious adventure together and start uncovering lots of secrets.

i adored it! veronica is such a strong character which made it so much fun to root for her and follow along with her. i loved all the twists and turns this book took and uncovering all the secrets along with veronica and stoker. i did think the plot was a bit slow moving, but i was still invested in the characters the whole time! i also think it makes sense since this was the introductory book to a long series. the characters ended up feeling incredibly real to me! i loved veronica’s and stoker’s banter and watching their acquaintance develop over the course of the book. the scientific and historical parts of this book also made it a lot of fun. i am very excited to continue this series!

Enjoyable murder-solving shenanigans complete with a bedevilled gentleman natural scientist and a gloriously rational lady lepidopterist. The game is afoot....
