I could cry tears of joy due to my love of this book and to think it’s a series of 9. Yay!
I could tell immediately it would be one I’d rate highly as within the first chapter I’m taking pictures of quotes or moments that I like. This book is laugh out loud funny. I had one instance where a scene in particular got me in a public setting and I am currently smiling simply thinking about it.
The bond between Veronica and Stoker is so believable, even their conversations and actions around one another change throughout and it’s not often I can see something like that take place. Their relationship at the beginning is so different compared to the end, yet both of their walls are still up. There’s still so many things Veronica doesn’t know about Stoker. They even talk about things that I don’t hear spoken of in other books and that’s important to me as I’ve read enough now that I crave something startlingly different in order for me to feel satisfied and Veronica and Stoker deliver on that regard. They are both so important to me and I can’t believe I feel that way for fictional characters but here we go.
The mystery was intriguing and well thought out in my opinion. I throughly enjoyed all the side characters introduced and found even the shorter lived ones compelling and memorable. I liked how the duo handled situations, no moments where I rolled my eyes or sighed in exasperation. I am still in shock with the overall mystery and how clever the ending of this first entry was. Heartwarming! Want to cry because I find it emotional even though it’s really not. Ugh I just can’t, I love this book and struggle talking about things the more I love them.
And to the 2 loyal people who read my reviews in their entirety (hi mummy👋🥺) both writhing in pain, groaning in unison with what it is I’m about to say but.. another factor to add to my enjoyment is how much I love Dragonball and Stoker acts very much like Piccolo. I love comparing two disconnected media with one another unintentionally usually but it’s odd to think how that connection wouldn’t have existed if I had read this book only 6 months prior. I love having that extra reason into cherishing it!
“The length of the key were incised a series of letters. "BOLOXST," I read aloud. "But what does it mean? It sounds like a rude word."
"I highly doubt your aunt would have given you a key with a variation of 'bollocks' on it. A surname, perhaps? Did you ever meet anyone of their acquaintance with that name?"
This is what made me laugh in public!
"What is so funny?" I demanded.
"You. I never imagined you would actually understand my signal."
"You mean your melodramatic attempts at Morse code by drumming your fists on the deck? It's a wonder every boatman on the Thames didn't understand it."
He rolled his eyes heavenward. "Forgive me for failing to find a more subtle means of informing you of my intentions, but I was improvising. I've never been abducted before. I shall do better next time."
"You must admit your lesser qualities have been far more to the fore than your noble ones. Aside from your expert medical care of me-involving a situation for which you were at least in part responsible— you have been churlish and impatient, quick to anger, impulsive, suspicious, and frequently rude."
"Well, thank God I am not the sensitive sort," he said lightly. "Else I might think you didn't like me."
He shook his head as if to clear it. "I smoked opium once. It felt like listening to you, only rather more mundane."
“The tightness in my chest eased and I could breathe once more. This was not the end, then. Whatever this strange connection was between us—it was not yet finished. He shook his head as if to clear it. "I am glad this is not the end," he said, echoing my thoughts, and then he hesitated a moment, his gaze intent, his hands curling into fists as if to keep himself from reaching out.”
