I never knew I could enjoy the humor in a historical book this much before I came across Veronica and Stoker's banter! I cackled out loud a few times, and I enjoyed how their relationship developed from barely being able to tolerate each other to forming a soft spot and always having each other's back. The progress felt so natural that it surprised me when Veronica pointed out she had only known Stoker for such a short time because in my mind they were already a heavenly match!

I wasn't sure whether this could be categorized as a mystery book, though. There were so many odd and dramatic things going on throughout the book that distracted me from the mystery plot. I can't say I enjoyed all of them, especially when a certain part made me wonder whether the book suddenly took a turn to another genre. I almost assumed this was a fantasy book when I read about the circus. I ended up not caring much about the mystery (I was only enjoying the vibe), but it worked in my favor as the plot twist ended up pleasantly surprising for me.

I'll definitely read the second book of the series because I'm not ready to say goodbye to Veronica and Stoker!

The stilted language in the writing bugged me, and I just wasn't into the character or the story.

Bess recommended this book to me, and I loved it! Victorian England mystery and danger with lepidopterists, a traveling curiosity show, and expertly-altered clothing meant for exploring. The first of a series!
