After a few months of picking this up a reading a few pages at a time, I gave up. I understand why you guys might like it but I couldn't push myself through this whole thing, let alone like 5 more books. Not a vibe. Underwhelming. Sigh.

I really enjoyed this historical Victorian murder mystery more than I could have possibly imagined. What truly made it for me was Veronica who was clever, fierce and also incredibly resilient. I love using smarts for good and this was so much of that. The banter and relationship between her and Stoker was also such a joy. Their witty barbs made the book fly by and it was a fun adventure to see the mystery unravel. Stoker was also such a good curmudgeon with a side of gentleman. I also liked how some secrets and background weren’t totally covered in the book - setting up more adventure for the future.

Easy and lighthearted, and super engaging. It was a great murder mystery, clue hunting historical fiction. The banter and humor was a lot of fun.
I totally forgot to review this one.
But it was a pretty memorable story so no worries.
So Veronica grew up with 2 aunts and the second one has recently passed away leaving her alone in the world. Alone, but with strangers coming at her left, right and center. Who the heck are these people and why are they interested in her???
She a pretty practical and self reliant lady. Especially considering the times and how hard it was to be a woman on your own back then. She ends up with Stoker as her supposed (much tarnished) knight. They don't much care for each other at first but eventually evolve to sort of friends with a promise of more in books to come. Stoker is still mysterious.
I confess I got a little annoyed with Veronica and her very 'stiff' unflappability. She was so dry and non-empathetic. But she starts to get better in the second half. And I did like that she could kick ass without Stoker's help. The nice thing about her unflappable nature is that is makes the story pretty low angst.
So just who is Veronica???
Well that's the mystery.
I did find the reveal a bit OTT, maybe even jumped the shark BUT,
I look forward to the next book! ; )
Safety is pretty good and this was a clean book anyways. No double standards here!

Spoiler
Veronica is in the habit of going away butterfly hunting and taking a foreign lover with each trip. I think there have been at least 3. Holiday affairs basically. Stoker was married and we have yet to hear more about that except that it didn't end well. There was an OW he was with when he was younger that makes a bit of nuisance of herself. Veronica was less bothered by the OW than the reader, lol.
Fun characters and dialogue. The mystery was not a real nail biter, but entertaining.
Wow why do I love this so much? I didn't think it would work for me but it really speaks to the teenage version of myself who was weirdly obsessed with Agatha Christie

i've never had this much bi-panic with a book ever. veronica speedwell and stoker are my queen and king.
veronica is ICONIC. i love her matter-of-factly, no bullshit attitude. she is intelligent, determined, and a strong independent woman and i WORSHIP her. and stoker? a large natural historian with an eyepatch and earring? my man my man my man.
this was hilarious, adventurous, with some of the best writing i've come across for a historical setting. absolutely one of my favorite books i've read this year. i can't wait to read the rest of the series!
