Maybe 3.5 stars? I loved the smart, feisty heroine. I love the Victorian Era. It was written the way I was hoping Jane Steele had been treated.
But . . . I saw the major plot point before it was revealed. Hoping all the time that the author wasn't going to go THERE. But she did. I like Historical Fiction. I don't like authors twisting real people/events to suit their fiction.
Too bad, I could have enjoyed more of the series otherwise.

I enjoyed this book! I started reading the latest Veronica speedwell book #9, and realized it was a series so I went back to book one. It was good but definitely moved slow sometimes for me. I enjoy Veronica as a narrator since she has little asides in her comments, which adds to an understanding of her character. She is stubborn, clever, and determined.

She meets a brooding Stoker who will in later books become her love interest. There wasn’t as much chemistry with them in book one but he becomes a helpful companion to her as they unravel a murder mystery and determine the truth behind Veronica’s parentage. I enjoyed the wild chase and the complicated backstories, I think Deanna Rayburn does an excellent job of weaving together complex narratives, even if it is a little confusing to follow.

But this book isn’t as detailed as later ones, as this really sets up the rest of the series and the author becomes even better with writing with each successive book!
