This was always my favorite story & Disney cartoon when I was a kid.

clssic

It's been a long time since I read this. I find it faintly disturbing now, and Peter is not the hero he seemed when I was little. It's still worth reading though.

I've always enjoyed and somewhat related to the story of Peter Pan & Wendy. A pure childhood fantasy encoded with a great degree of meaning. Barrie had a clear understanding of children- how they make-believe as their parents/adults, and what they would want out of a story. It gives you enough and makes you wonder about the characters internal worlds. In a Carrol like fashion, there are reminders of how we, the reader, are observing the narrative which negates the idea that we are there in it. It uses some painterly visuals to accomadate us into it however, I expect drawn from its source as a play.

god peter is so annoying i almost forgot

Honestly, Peter Pan as a character kind of sucks.

The story is definitely full of whimsy and fantasy (and I can see why kids would fall in love with fantasy from this) but ultimately his character was a bully and a brat. As a reformed (I think) brat, this would have 100% given me a complex as a kid.

I genuinely liked the ending and seeing the generations grow with Peter. I wish it wasn't completely gendered as all the daughters met and fell in love with him. Something about falling in love with a boy that your mom and grandmother also loved gives me the ick.

Will more than likely read to my child though (or have them read to me) one day.

So charming. (We listened to Jim Dale’s narration. He could read the phone book and I’d probably find it just as charming.
