Boy oh boy it was a ride. Dreamlike haze from start to finish.

i really enjoyed the first half of this book as the mysterious and surreal aspect really created appeal. i was hooked and couldn't put it down. however, the second half left me incredibly underwhelmed. there was unnecessary detail regarding immoral acts and relationships (including a graphic rape scene) and i felt deeply unsatisfied with the ending. besides for nakata, hoshino, and oshima (most times), none of the other characters were even bearable. kafka was the worst of them all and i could barely get through his chapters.

I was put off by the uncomfortable amount of sexual depiction

This book is surreal, confusing, and beautiful. I absolutely adore the writing style, and much preferred it to Norwegian Wood, the other Murakami book I have read. The strangeness of the story is done so well, and the different characters and their perspectives all add such a different flavour to the overall narrative.

Overall, an amazing book that would have deserved a full 5 stars, except that the way that women are written is absolutely vile — I have never seen a clearer example of rabid sexual objectification in such an unnecessary, uncomfortable, and graphic way.
