For me, this book evokes a mix of nostalgia for stories I read in my youth, curiosity about mysteries in the plot, and distaste for the taboo relationships between some characters. It's not difficult to read, but the story challenges the reader.

Genuinely one of the best books i’ve ever read. It’s complicated and confusing and there seem to be some loose ends, but I didn’t even care because of how much I enjoyed reading it. I’ve never read a book that truly felt surreal to read without being off-putting, but this book was a perfect blend of surrealism and entertaining plot.

I’m so conflicted by this book. Murakami went to lots of unnecessarily disgusting details (e.g., killing cats, incest, rape) that made reading parts of it so insufferable. Then there were also parts written so beautifully I felt like I was being sucked in this whole ‘nother world.

First introduction to surrealism in writing. I enjoyed the fantastical elements of this book, but some of Murakami’s ideas and writing was frankly creepy.
