This book felt like a fever dream of a philosopher who's high off his kite. I had no idea what was going on or what anything was supposed to mean, and yet I still enjoyed reading it. In all honesty, maybe that was an interesting way to read this book, given how that was the way Mr. Nakata lived his life. There were so many metaphors it made my head spin. I liked the idea of an old disabled man who could talk to cats, and how his life intertwined with a 15-year-old runaway. I don't know if I should feel dumb for not understanding how their lives intertwined exactly, or if I should just be happy to go along with the ride and enjoy the book for what it is. I didn't like the constant mention of incestuous relationships, and at times the writing of women in this story seemed very objectifying. Kafka On The Shore made me question how I should feel about the book, but at the same time, I think the book just told me to not think about stuff like that. This is the kind of story that you unknowingly assign your own meaning to.

I liked this book! I found one half very engaging, interesting and unique, which was hard to the other half to live up to. I found myself wanting to get through the Kafka chapters, so I could go back to parts I enjoyed the most, which I suppose is the danger of splitting up your book like this. Overall, a book like no other, enjoyed it very much.

There were things I loved about this book, and there were things I hated. So I'm going to give it a middle ground of 3 stars.
I really enjoyed the writing style, and the story, although incredibly strange, was very entertaining. I really enjoyed Nataka’s storyline, which is the sole reason why this book has a three star rating and not a one.
I've got to say I really did not like our protagonist Kafka. He was, at least to me, a really bland and unlikable character. Also, the amount of needless, and at times disturbing, sexual content that is narrated through the perspective of a fifteen-year-old was incredibly off-putting. I think I would have enjoyed the book much more if that had been cut from the story.
I usually love books like this but sadly some of the content really put me off.
