mysterious

Buzzfeed unsolved, super weird incest stuffs, Murakami writing female characters so badly, and more confusing stuffs (I didn’t understand a single thing)(I mean I think I understand it but I know I don’t and I might not) but pretty good nonetheless plus I really liked Oshima. There’s nothing else to say.

Magical Realism done truly magically. Felt like I was weirdly floating thru space the entire book. It took a bit to get into and I didn’t think I would keep reading bc Murakami’s descriptions of females left a bad taste but as i kept reading I would find myself thinking about the book all day. My first murakami but I think I’ll slowly be reading more

I literally hated this book. It wasn’t written badly (although there were very long and detailed descriptions of a fourteen year old boy’s body as he showered. Horribly, horribly detailed), but the content was just… why? What on earth? Who wrote this and WHY? There was a lot of sexualization of women, too, including the main character describing his mother and sister’s bodies in sexual ways. <And he sleeps with his mother. And assaults his sister. > And there were really detailed sexual fantasies for absolutely no reason. On top of all that, the plot made no sense at all. Just… absolutely a book I wish I hadn’t read.

From start to finish this book kept me captivated with its surreal nature and excellent storytelling. It was confusing in all the best ways, you really want to keep going and find out what will happen next.

The characters are well developed, my favourite being Hoshino or Oshima. The scenes from Kafka's perspectives do a great job of what a 15 year old boy would think in given situations and feels quite authentic.

This book deals with some heavy topics. Please check the trigger warnings here before you go in because it may be upsetting. If you are OK currently to read this book I highly recommend.
