I really liked parts of it. There were a lot of quotes and ideas i resonated with and parts of kafka that made me feel so comforted but at the end of the day there’s so many disgusting parts that detract from it. It’s written wonderfully and has so much potential but the misogyny and incest shit and dodgy age gaps and one dimensional women are hard to ignore.

Really interesting plot. I was hooked on this book due to the mysterious aspect of the plot and trying to make sense of the timeline and all the weird things happening.

However, I’m not a fan of how Murakami writes about human bodies — both male and female. Sometimes the descriptions are quite unnecessary to me. Also not really a fan of the way he writes sex scenes. Despite this, I still really enjoyed the book on the whole. I find it easy to follow the story even without searching for greater meanings / deep reflections within yourself. So it’s a good read even if you just read it for the plot.

i definitely enjoyed many parts of it. some of the more contemplative paragraphs were really well crafted and make you re-examine your own life. i think if you let go the need to understand everything that's going on--which i believe is what murakami intended--it's a very interesting story that transcends time and space.

i just think there's a lot of fillers that don't add to the plot. i don't recognize the purpose of the ramblings about music and composers and classical pieces. and also i get that this loosely is inspired by the oedipus complex, but the sex scenes reaaaaaaally don't sit well with me, and i'm tired of murakami's horny ass unnecessarily dropping details about women's boobs and teenage dicks p l e a s eeeeeeeee.

i'm glad i finally finished it. i'll probably pick up another murakami when i can feel i can tolerate his horniness.

for starters, haruki murakami should not be allowed within a 3km radius of cats. or women. i won't even bother going into detail, but this entire story is a brainfuck. that being said, i actually enjoyed reading it, even if i wanted to throw up on multiple occasions due to either the description of female characters, or the cats. i will not elaborate on the cats, but you have been warned. i really want to give this a lower rating, but i think the book was laced with crack because 4 stars is the lowest i'm going.

This started as one of my favorite reads for 2021. I loved the writing, the different plots and how they would connect, the absurdities of the events, the metaphores... But then towards 75% I felt like Murakami went a little too far on provoking what's perceived as right or wrong and it was really hard to finish. Mostly it's on me for not reading de TW tho
