I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As with his other books this one was interesting and well written and really made me think. Also like the other books of this author that I’ve read I did not understand large portions of it. I feel this is intentional. Much of this book feels like a dream and as in dreams many things are not explained or held on to and that leads to a fun and enigmatic experience. I absolutely love the worlds that Haruki Murakami creates and this one left me wanting to read more of his books. 4/5 it was a good read.

i don’t know whether i loved this book or didn’t like it at all. the main body of the book was wonderfully written and was quintessential metaphysical murakami, however the last fifth or so felt so distant from the original part that it was almost a strange epilogue. of course, one would say that that Is the metaphor but i don’t know how i feel about that sort of ending. a regular freudian fantasy.
i liked it, but when i sensed that it was going for a meta narrative conclusion, i’m not sure whether i enjoyed the ending.
oshima was delightful to read about. i hope he is happy.
did i prefer it to other murakami novels ? no. but is this by any means a poor novel? also no. i loved the metaphysical elements of wind up bird, and if they were more subtle in this book then perhaps it could have been five stars. who knows. i will be thinking about this for a while.

i’ve heard a lot about murakami but i just had to see it for myself and so i did 😻
the narration got sort of confusing throughout the book for absolutely no reason. there was no thought behind the “dreamlike” writing. there is absolutely nothing wrong with dreamlike writing on its own and not every story has to have a deep message but the way some people treat murakami as some contemplative genius is alarming. open up the schools 😭
i will say that it was an easy and fast read. the writing was sort of comforting (???? idk) however every time you get wrapped into it murakami decided to include a woman into the story and y’all weren’t not exaggerating it’s actually THAT bad. idc how symbolic his work pretends to be the way he writes women is a crime against humanity.
the book was at times enjoyable for sure but other parts of the book were so unnecessary. imagine how much more fun murakami could have been if his worldview wasn’t this limited? that could be said for all of them tho couldn’t it.
anyways all in all it was fine. i saw someone say that murakami is a beach read for sad people and its probably a good description of his work. it’s atmospheric and comfortable (if u can get through the bigoted depictions of women) but the books ends when you close it.
2 stars based on vibes idk might change later
note to self
stop rage baiting yourself go pick up a book that you’ll actually like jesus

I did not enjoy this book at all. The only character I liked was Nakata and his friend already forgot his name. Actually such pointless and weird sexual themes and literally none of it made sense and not even in a cool thought provoking way. Really disappointed tbh. Don’t even know what the story was

in my opinion this book is his masterpiece. stunning

This book is a trip in itself. Not going to say much because I can't describe it all in words. Murakami is a genius of our generation. Enough said.
