“We’re all dreaming, aren’t we?”

How much one enjoys this book is based on if you know that this is a retelling of Oedipus and how much you enjoy the original story of Oedipus. I can’t say I’m a die hard fan of the big O, but I appreciate its impact on weirdo and traumatized artsy people worldwide.

More 3.5, pretty weird. Also kinda pointless

woooooooooooooooooooo

I have never wanted to rip out an entire chapter from a book before reading this.

I laughed, cried, screamed, laughed some more and cried several more times.

Kafka On The Shore was my first Murakami book, I went into it blind. The first few chapters were confusing, I didn’t understand why I was being told stories of characters who seemingly had nothing to do with each other and yet I couldn’t stop reading.

Then things slowly started coming together and I was hooked. Just as I was thoroughly enjoying it, Chapter 16 came and I had a panic attack. I asked my friends if this book was worth reading because I was about to tear it up. They all said yes, so after a day or two off of reading I picked it back up and after that I was even more immersed in the world. I was fully addicted to the story and needed to know how it ended. I think the one day I spent 5 hours reading because I couldn’t stop.

It’s now one of my favorites. Highly recommend!

3.5 stars

I liked the early middle more than I did the ending? It is definitely the type of book where you interpret your own meanings from it and you get out what you put in, but I enjoyed more about Kafka spending his days with the library staff than whatever realisations he came to alone.

In the best way possible: this is the weirdest book I have read so far. The completely unpredictable characters, storyline & dialogues makes it particularly entertaining, guiding us through a philosophical journey, all while remaining surprisingly funny. Moreover, the constant use of metaphors, cultural references & mythology challenges the reader’s thoughts.
I discovered I like japanese literature —even though it’s quite brave to affirm that by having read this single novel; I will be reading more Murakami books & japanese literature in general.

PS; One of my goals in life is to be as cultured as Oshima.
