This book is well written and it is obvious that the author is talented at writing magical realism, but he absolutely cannot write women to the point that it diminishes everything else it does well. Every single woman is used for sex in this book with there being very few non-sex scenes involving the female characters, one of which is one of them cooking for Kafka. Kafka on the Shore suffers from the same issues as Neon Genesis Evangelion - the protagonist’s actions towards women are in fact an issue, but what causes him to change is being disgusted at himself and what he’s done rather than pushback from the victim who is showing agency.
I could maybe even look passed it if this was the one book that had these issues, but a look at Murakami’s other works shows that adult/minor relationships and incest are a recurring theme (and these don’t involve Oedipal curses).
Definitely not a worthless read, but hard to listen to philosophical talk from someone obviously not writing for people as a whole

As magical and riveting as you'd hope from Murakami. Pushes on boundaries between reality and unreality, prophecy and choice, good and evil - but all within a narrative that is weirdly compelling, even if the riddles aren't tidied into neat solutions by the book's end. Loved it, will absolutely reread.

This author is so weird! This book is like if Oedipus Rex and Spirited Away (Ghibli Studios) had a child and that child accidentally ingested LSD. The weirdest thing about this book is how nothing connects, but you can see the strings that connect each event and theme. I know this entire story makes sense to the author, but I am just unable to see what he sees.
I fell in love with Nakata and his companion, Hoshino. When they first met, I was scared that Hoshino (or anyone in the book) would be mean to the old man. I was less fond of the main character Kafka (and the Crow). I really can't go into the plot of the book because I still don't fully understand it, but I definitely plan on reading it again. Turns out the author created this book so that it could not be understood the first time, the reader needs to read this book over and over to truly understand it.

Everything is a metaphor Kafka Tamura.

I enjoyed Murakami’s typical mix of the ordinary & extraordinary in this strange and surreal world he created. Similar to Wind Up Bird, Kafka involved magical realism & metaphysical elements, creating a sort of alternate universe with countless bizarre happenings.
Loved the convergence of the two distinct yet interrelated narratives, the exploration of consciousness, and always enjoy the glimpse into Japanese life. One of my favorite Murakami pieces.
