Honestly, I almost stopped reading this after the first Crow segment, because it was so disjointed and jarring. But then, doesn't that also describe grief? I'm so glad I gave it a second try, because I feel like this is one of those books that sought me out instead of the other way around. I kinda needed to read it.

Bonus points because my son's name is also Max and I really like that name.

Beautiful writing and I found the characterization of crow very fitting. Lovely switching of perspectives; beautiful end. Will be sure to return to this one over and over again.

I feel inadequate to review the intense and overwhelming sadness emmanating from this book.

this book is going to hold a special place in my heart, even though i didnt give it 5 stars. sometimes it was hard to follow, especially the crows pov. heartbreaking and raw.

if you're interested into something similar i suggest A monster calls.
