I think this is one where my rating might grow over time as I think about it. I’d like to read it again.

I came across this when pulling books as a volunteer at the library and, no judgement, loved the cover. I like books where I’m slightly unsure of exactly what happened, but I feel like I understand the emotions and mood and this was that.  Yes, that’s poetry, but I can’t usually read and enjoy poetry.

okay i loved both the concept and format. however i do feel like i need to read the poem (crow by ted hughes) to get full enjoyment out of this book. will be doing that

some perfectly acceptable 114 pages of prose!! fascinatingly written with that signature disjointed, heavy semantic max porter style, not so much emotionally stirring as vaguely interesting. the crow metaphor never quite landed for me, or landed too easily, which left me feeling expectantly into random corners of the story (story?) for more depth. this can't be the whole thing! it was. oh well. my fault, I suppose? I think they fucked it over with the title a bit, like we're stupid and should refer back to the cover for repeated clarification on the metaphor in the half an hour it takes to read it all. not bad!!!!!! will change nobody's life.

An odd little book that I struggled to get into. The parts that were more normal - dealing with feelings of grief and sadness - were very relatable. The chapters either “by” Crow or strongly about Crow, I couldn’t really understand or get into. Those chapters jolted me out of the story, and I felt that it was detrimental to the overall story, such as it was.

It made me laugh, then made me sad, it was comically musical, then it quickly changed its shape to prose, just to unreliably return to poetry, diving into dark themes. A very entertaining and unusual read.

Grief is a dizzying collection of small vignettes, memories and thoughts scattered like small feathers from a dead bird.
